Kumagusu Minakata (4.15.1867-12.29.1941)
Kumagusu Minakata A free-spirited world-renowned naturalist who earned the epithet ea walking encyclopediaf for his native marvelous memory. Went to America at the age of 19, captivated by the wonder of slime molds and immersed himself in the studies. Struggled to pursue his studies, such as traveling Cuba as a member of a circus, before making his way to UK. Using remarkable linguistic talent and extensive knowledge, contributed to making lists of the Eastern collection of the British Museum, while publishing a lot of theses in the science magazine eNaturefh Also met Sun Yat-sen, father of the Chinese Revolution, soon established quite a rapport and remained close friends since then. At 33, came back to Japan and settled in Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture, where devoting himself to research on slime molds. Discovered many new species through trekking the Kumano Mountains. Although branded as an oddball because of his uninhibited behavior and unique scholastic achievements accomplished while turning his back on all academic societies, Kumagusu Minakata was by nature a shy and kind-hearted soul and a giant who devoted his life to the natural conservation movement.
